Society News: November 2011

November 2011

Welcome to the final edition of our newsletter for 2011.

Our concert on 4 December brings to a close what has been an exceptional year of activity for the Society as it celebrated its 90th anniversary. I would especially like to thank our Committee for the extraordinary amount of work they put in to make it all happen. Also, I would like to thank all the artists who have entertained us throughout the year.

In earlier times the Society ran a series of concerts for young people. A copy of the article that appeared in the Argus newspaper on the 19 April 1944 to promote two of these concerts is reproduced here. Our December concert revisits that time in our history. The Huntingtower String Orchestra is an award winning school group that has won many first prizes in several of Melbourne’s large Eisteddfods. The numbers of students learning a classical instrument at the school (75% in the Junior School and 50% in the Senior School) is testament to the strength of Huntingtower’s  music program.

Following the concert, the Committee and our three faithful volunteers, Elisabeth, Pam and Terry would like to invite you all to join them for a special Christmas supper, with wine, cheese, savouries and Christmas cake, as well as the usual tea and percolated coffee.

I look forward to seeing you at the December recital.

Sarah Cuming
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! From the LMS Committee

Our Gold Coin Donation for Programs is proving a success. Since we last published our fundraising thermometer in our September newsletter, we have raised a further $200 to assist with increasing our artists’ fees.

Thank you to everyone who has supported this very important initiative. Your help is important to us and we look forward to your continuing involvement in 2012!

Huntingtower is a co-educational primary and secondary school interested in promoting performance excellence in music. There are orchestras, ensembles and choirs available for student participation at all levels. Members of the orchestra are currently holders of the Glen Prior Award, the Murray Sharp Award, the Olwen Game Award (all coveted awards for chamber music) and the George Logie-Smith Perpetual Trophy for Performing Excellence. They have also won the Victorian Secondary Students’ Chamber Music Award for ten years. The Huntingtower String Orchestra has performed with soloists Prudence Davis (flute), Jeffrey Crellin (oboe), Geoffrey Payne (trumpet), Julie Payne (trumpet), and Eric Bramble (french horn) – all principal players with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. World-renowned conductor Professor John Hopkins, the orchestra’s patron, has also conducted the orchestra on several occasions. The Orchestra toured New Zealand in 1997, 2004 and 2010 and it has also toured Tasmania and South Australia on four occasions during which live broadcasts were given for ABC Radio.
