Lyrebird Commission

Our June concert was a great success with over a hundred people witnessing the premiere of “The Lyrebird in my Piano” in the presence of the composer Richard Grantham. The concert showcased the great musicianship and technical skill of PLEXUS who obviously enjoyed and appreciated the opportunity to perform for the Society. The audience in turn were very enthusiastic in their appreciation of another superb concert. Your committee sees the Lyrebird Commission, where the Society commissions a new work to be performed as part of its annual concert program, as  an important part of  the Society’s role in the promoting fine music, especially in supporting new compositions. We are now well advanced in planning for next year’s commission.

John North

As previously sadly advised, John North, a past president and life member of the Society, died last year. Recently the Society  received a generous bequest from his estate. This continues the long history of commitment and service that he gave to the Society. The committee is considering how best to use the bequest to honour Johns’s memory and further the aims of the Society.

On a similar topic, over 12 months ago the Society applied for inclusion on the Australian Government’s Register of Cultural Organisations. We hope that this application will be successful, in which case the Society will be able to issue tax deductible receipts for future donations over $2.

Subscriptions

It is that time of year when many members’ subscriptions become due. If yours are due you will receive a renewal notice with this newsletter. Please pay your subscriptions as soon as is practicable as indicated on the notice. If there is NO notice then your subs are paid up and are probably not due until January next year..

Cellist and conductor Michael Dahlenburg completed a Bachelor of Music Performance in cello at the University of Melbourne studying with Molly Kadarauch and studied conducting with the late Sir John Hopkins. He also received a full scholarship and fellowship at ANAM studying cello under Howard Penny and Timo-Veikko Valve.

Michael was a founding member of the Hamer Quartet which won First prize  at the Asia-Pacific Chamber competition in 2009. They performed and studied across Australia and Europe, with performances at the Norfolk and Norwich Chamber Music Festival (UK) and the International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove UK.

He has been guest associate principal cellist with Orchestra Victoria and was the ACO’s Emerging Artist in 2008. He has since worked with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, ACO2, the Melbourne Symphony

Orchestra and he is currently a core cellist with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Michael has conducted the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and has been involved with the Symphony Services International Program since 2011.

Emma Sullivan (double bass) has performed in orchestras in Australia, New Zealand, Japan and USA. Notable experiences include playing at the 2008 Olympic Arts Festival with New Zealand Symphony Orchestra in Beijing, China, taking part in the 25th Anniversary Pacific Music Festival in Sapporo, Japan Emma has studied with Michael Morgan, Jeff Bradetich and Steve Reeves. During her studies, Emma received a number of awards, including Griffith University and Queensland Conservatorium medals, first prize in the University of North Texas Concerto Competition and joint first prize in the ANAM Concerto Competition.

Emma is a core member of Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, plays regularly with Melbourne Symphony, Orchestra Victoria and Tasmania Symphony and shares her love of the double bass with her students. In 2012, Emma was awarded the Peter Mitchell Churchill Fellowship to undertake a two-month period of intensive study and mentoring under renowned French double bassist and pedagogue Thierry Barbe in Paris.

Leigh Harrold  is one of Australia’s busiest and most sought-after pianists.He completed undergraduate and post-graduate studies at The University of Adelaide with concert pianist Gil Sullivan. During this time he was a National Finalist in the Young Performer Awards and a recipient of the prestigious Beta Sigma Phi Classical Music Award – the conservatorium’s highest honour. He moved to Melbourne in 2003 to take up a full scholarship at ANAM studying with Geoffrey Tozer and in 2004 was made the Academy Fellow.

Leigh has performed extensively throughout Europe, North America, Africa and Australia as both soloist and chamber musician, including concerts at Australia House in London, the Royal Academy of Music, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Harare International Festival of Arts and concerto engagements with many Australian orchestras.  He  is a founding member of the Kegelstatt Ensemble and the Helpmann Awardnominated Syzygy Ensemble and has an internationally acclaimed piano duo with London-based pianist Coady Green with whom he regularly tours through Europe, Australia and Africa. Leigh is a recording artist for ABC Classics and in 2010 released his debut recording for Sony with soprano Greta Bradman. An enthusiastic and committed teacher and speaker, Leigh is currently on the Associate Faculty at ANAM. In April 2012 Leigh was awarded a PhD for his research into the music of Robert Muczynski

This new collaboration between two celebrated artists from different worlds has immediately established itself as a formidable force in Australian chamber music. Zoe Black has long been thought of as a violinist’s violinist, and pianist/composer Joe Chindamo’s unique musical gifts place him in a class of his own.  The Black/Chindamo union is not a classical/jazz crossover ala Jacques Loussier, but rather the product of two artists creating a musical dialogue with a combined language, resulting in a new music altogether. The repertoire is an eclectic mix of radical reinventions of works by the masters and original compositions by Chindamo. Together, they are creating an entirely new genre of Australian music, combining lyricism, urbane rhythms, a modern romanticism, making music thrilling, passionate, daring and alive.

Zoe Black is a violinist’s violinist, known for her beauty of sound and natural virtuosity. She has performed throughout the world as soloist, chamber musician and as a member of the celebrated Australian Chamber Orchestra, with whom she held the position of Assistant Leader for five years. During the past decade she has dedicated her energies to Chamber Music and was a founding member of Freshwater and Firebird Trios. She now devotes her considerable gifts to special projects, especially her duo with  Joe Chindamo alongside her part-time role in the Australian Chamber Orchestra and ACO2 educational programme.

Joe Chindamo is a pianist, composer, arranger who cannot be categorised easily. With twenty CDs to his name, many of them topping charts in Japan, countless world tours and a plethora of awards, he can comfortably take his place amongst the best jazz pianists in the world. Like the greatest jazz pianists, Joe’s abilities transcend jazz,  As an arranger he possesses an uncanny ability to personalise any work which enters his orbit. A man with an international reputation, Joe has performed concerts all over the world including the Umbria Jazz Festival, The Tokyo Dome and The Lincoln Centre in New York.
