Meet the Artist

Pianist Benjamin Kopp has made a mark on the Australian music scene in recent years. He has performed with all the major Australian symphony orchestras, including the Melbourne, Sydney and Western Australian Symphony Orchestras, and Orchestra Victoria. He has performed Prokoffiev’s Concerto no. 2 with both Vladimir Verbitsky and Brett Kelly as conductor, and Mozart’s Piano Concerto K488 under the baton of Marco Zuccarini. His performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto K414 with John Harding received two repeat performances, and was chosen for the Best Concertos of 2004 concert at the Australian National Academy of Music, where he held a full scholarship for two years.

In 2006 Benjamin’s violin/ piano duo with Emma Jardine was one of 10 duos selected worldwide to take part in the Duo Course in Lausanne, Switzerland, where they performed in masterclasses given by Pierre Amoyal and Bruno Canino. In the same year, as part of the Salzburg Summer Academy, Kopp was selected to perform as soloist in concerts at the Wiener Saal and the Mirabell Palace.

Highlights of 2005 include a self-conducted performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto K414 with the Australian National Academy of Music Orchestra, becoming a national finalist in the 2005 Australian Chamber Music Competition as a member of the Emerald Piano Trio, a performance of Messiaen’s mammoth two piano work ‘Visions de 1’Amen’ with Leigh Harrold and a performance of the Don Banks Horn Trio in the Melbourne Arts Festival.
In 2004 Kopp performed in a duo concert with cellist Mats Lindstrom and played Strauss and Beethoven cello sonatas with Alexander Baillie. In that year he was also a Piano Finalist in the 2004 Symphony Australia Young Performer Awards

From 2004 to 2006 Benjamin was an Academy Musician and fullscholarship holder at the Australian National Academy of Music, where he studied with Rita Reichmann. Previously, under the direction of Daniel Herscovitch, he completed his Bachelor of Music at the Sydney Conservatorium. For more than ten years prior to this he studied with pianist Jennifer Hammond. He has also studied with John Perry, Mark Gasser, Margaret Hair and Adrian Oetiker, and has performed in masterclasses for Gary Graffman, Piers Lane, Angela Hewitt and Michael Kieren Harvey, among others.

He has been awarded many scholarships and prizes, including the Ian Potter Travelling Scholarship, the David Nhilla Dumbrell Memorial award and a scholarship to attend the Lenk Summer Academy in Switzerland. Kopp’s recent CD releases include appearances on the hugely successful Hush CD, which was made to raise money for the Royal Children’s Hospital, and a CD of Australian two piano works with Jennifer Hammond.
